How do we work

In 1996, the World Food Summit organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations was held in Rome, Italy. South Asia Network on Food, Ecology and Culture (SANFEC) is the logical outcome of interactions between grass roots organisations of South Asia. In addition to various environmental and developmental activities, these organizations actively involved in their own communities around the fundamental necessity of life: the food. But for SANFEC "food" is not merely an object of production and consumption. It  embodies social and cultural relations; food system is a kind of language through which communities articulate those relations.

The contributions of the organizations leading the network in the areas of ecological agriculture are well known; they are solidly grounded in the food producing communities. Ecological and cultural determination of food has led the network in conceptualizing the notion of 'food sovereignty' and SANFEC activities are focused in achieving this goal.

SANFEC is a network about South Asia, not a South Asian network. We consider any network with similar objectives as our allies and we could work together. Lead organizations are from South Asia: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Links are being made with Bhutan and the Maldives
